A Bit of The Art And History of Belly Dance

Its origins are as varied as the countries of the Middle East, Greece and Turkey. It has been said to be used in preparation for childbirth, as entertainment for and by women in the harems, as temple dances in the days of the pharaohs. Styles have evolved as cultural changes have occurred in these regions. Likely, it came to the United States courtesy of a young entrepreneur, Sol Bloom, working with the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Americans were at first scandalized, then enchanted by the movements. Today, the dance transcends politics, religions, and geographic borders.
